After 130 Days, Elon Musk Confirms He’s Leaving His Role From DOGE
Despite leading the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for just 130 days, Elon Musk has suddenly announced that he will be leaving the position in May.
Since US President Donald Trump took office for the second time this year, DOGE and Elon Musk have been in the news.
He appears to have served as Trump’s closest counselor, and cuts connected to DOGE have dominated the president’s policies thus far.
Musk promised cuts of up to $2 trillion when this new government advisory group was announced. He first set 2026 as the timeline to complete everything before later reversing this ambitious objective.

Musk believes he will achieve the $1 trillion savings objective as head of the department before leaving his position, but his departure is significantly earlier than expected.
According to Newsweek, Musk shocked many by announcing his desire to leave the government in an interview with Fox News presenter Bret Baier. Many believed that Musk’s position in government was unassailable, despite the president’s alleged restrictions on his authority.
The ‘accidental’ dismissal of important nuclear weapons officials and Ebola preventive efforts, which jeopardized national security, is just one example of the widespread budget and spending cuts Musk has implemented as head of DOGE.
According to the official DOGE website, savings of $140 billion have been made thus far. However, analysts have questioned the veracity of these figures, so if the $1 trillion objective is to be met within the next month, there appears to be a long way to go.
It seems that Musk’s early departure from DOGE is related to his position in the administration. According to his official classification as a “special government employee,” he is only permitted to work 130 days out of 365 in a year. If he worked every day starting with the inauguration, that would put him up until May 30.
“Well, I can’t tell you that,” explained Trump when asked whether DOGE would continue operations following Musk’s departure. “I think some of them may try and keep the DOGE people with them, but you know, at a certain point it will end.”
Departmental reorganizations have also jeopardized DOGE’s viability before; just before Trump took office, Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk’s former partner-in-chief, left the department, leaving the richest man in the world to operate it alone.
However, it is unclear if Musk will continue to have a close relationship with President Trump and a significant influence in the government. It is also unclear what role the billionaire will play after leaving the organization that was ostensibly created with him in mind.
