His name tag said Brandon and he was maybe nineteen years old, looking somewhere slightly to the left of her face in the way people do when they’ve been asked to deliver news they find uncomfortable.

“Ma’am, I’m sorry, but the seats in the front row are no longer available. You’ll need to remain back here.”

Sarah tightened her grip on the graduation program.

She could see Row B from where she was standing. Two chairs. Two reserved name cards, placed there by her son Michael that very morning, right after he had hugged her in the parking lot. She was the one who had shown up.
