A late-night situation involving Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland prompted a multi-agency reaction. Authorities verified the disastrous result a few hours later.
Heartbreak marked the end of what started as a terrifying emergency call. Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, was found dead early on November 5, 2025, after what authorities now believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
That night, a terrifying manhunt involving law enforcement, a terrified girlfriend, and a last, menacing communication from Kneeland himself took place. And a bright young life was gone by the time the sun rose over Frisco, Texas.
‘He Will End It All’: Panic as Girlfriend Warns Police of Armed and Desperate Kneeland
According to authorities, the harrowing experience started at around 10:39 p.m. when Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers chased a car into Frisco. Kneeland was behind the wheel. That night, Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina, called 911 and made a desperate attempt to assist, according to horrifying dispatch recordings.
The athlete was “armed” and had a history of mental illness, she disclosed to dispatchers. Catalina claimed to be speaking with his agent, but she was instructed to speak with Kneeland directly instead. Then came her call’s most terrifying section, which pushed police into overdrive. “He will end it all,” she said.
The final move that drove his family and friends into a panic was when a female dispatcher reported that Kneeland had sent a group text to loved ones bidding farewell.
Officers Track Kneeland’s Movements in Gruesome Detail
Officers on the ground were rushing against time, while Kneeland’s loved ones fervently hoped for the best. The sportsman was not there when his car was discovered wrecked at Warren Parkway on the southbound Dallas Parkway.
He had fled the wreck on foot, sparking a full-scale search effort involving K-9 units and drones. Then, something caught officers’ attention — something that stopped them cold. A responder noted a portable toilet near a building had its door slightly ajar, and from it came a pool of red liquid. “Looks like the door’s open. Red liquid coming out from [sic] it,” the officer radioed in.
The presence of a person was verified by a heat signature. Kneeland’s lifeless body lay in the portable toilet. One respondent explained what they observed:
“He’s going to be lying on his side facing inward and quite a bit of blood coming out.”
Just after 1:30 a.m., the National Football League (NFL) player was formally declared deceased. The official cause and manner of death will be decided by the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office. No new information has been made public, and the inquiry is still ongoing.
The shocking revelation has rocked the sports world, and his family is experiencing an unfathomable loss.
A Promising NFL Future Cut Short
In a game against the Arizona Cardinals two days earlier, Kneeland recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown. A video of the play was posted on Instagram by a Dallas Cowboys fan page, highlighting a noteworthy occasion in the early years of his professional career.
His agent, Jonathan Perzley of Sportstars, Inc., released a public message on Instagram after learning of his tragic passing. He discussed Kneeland’s development from a driven student-athlete at Western Michigan University (WMU) to a well-respected NFL player, emphasizing his work ethic, morals, and influence on others.
As they deal with the tragic death, Perzley also requested privacy for Kneeland’s loved ones, teammates, and family.
WMU, where Kneeland played from 2019 to 2023, also responded to the news. He was a cherished member of the campus community and a pivotal presence in the football team, according to the athletic department.
After a successful senior season and an appearance in the Reese’s Senior Bowl, Kneeland graduated with a degree in Sports Management and was chosen by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
The defensive end quickly left a lasting impact, according to head coach Lance Taylor, who guided the Broncos during Kneeland’s final year. He stated:
“Marshawn was so much more than an incredible football player—he was a remarkable young man who meant so much to our program and to me personally. His leadership, energy, and smile were infectious, and he left a lasting impact on everyone in our program.”
Although Kneeland’s football skills helped him go to the NFL, Vice President and Director of Athletics Dan Bartholomae pointed out that his influence at Western Michigan was primarily defined by his demeanor off the field, including his relationships with teammates, energy, and courteous demeanor.
A Legacy of Discipline and Determination
In his reflections on Kneeland’s early growth, former defensive line coach David Denham also highlighted his self-motivation and discipline. He clarified in an interview with the Dallas Cowboys in May 2024:
“Marshawn really separated himself by – and this was all due to the fact that he saw the elder statesmen in the room doing this – being in the facility at 6 a.m. doing prehab, not rehab, where he would get his body loose, stretch and actively ready to go.”
Kneeland frequently worked beyond the team’s scheduled practices, Denham said. He would go back to the facility after his afternoon classes were over to watch the tape, ask specific questions, and work on getting better.
Denham assigned him specific tasks to aid in his growth, like evaluating second-and-medium situations, which Kneeland accomplished with diligence and accuracy. He gradually started to stand out from the other players on the roster because to his practice of practicing plays by himself on the field.
“This commitment mirrored practices Marshawn Kneeland had seen in seasoned athletes like Braden Fiske, whose systematic preparation style he instinctively adopted,” Denham continued. Kneeland excelled at Godwin Heights High School in Wyoming, Michigan, prior to attending WMU, where he was named to the First Team All-State as a senior.
The athlete, who was formerly praised for his unadulterated skill and might on the field, is now included in the heartbreaking statistic of young athletes dying by suicide. His untimely death serves as a sobering reminder of the mental health problem that is engulfing professional sports as well as the personal hardships that are all too frequently hidden until it is too late.
