Eric Dane Seen In Wheelchair Amid Battle With Incurable Illness
Days after meeting with senators for ALS action, Eric Dane breaks hearts in D.C., where his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, says their children are “really suffering” due to the tragic deterioration. Dane is frail and in a wheelchair.
Previously, he was the self-assured, silver-haired beauty who captivated ladies on “Grey’s Anatomy.” Frail, silent, and confined to a wheelchair, Eric Dane now portrays a tragic figure, valiantly fighting a sickness that has taken away his strength but not his voice.
His most recent appearance coincides with someone—whom the Daily Mail claims is an insider—revealing information about Dane’s coping mechanisms with his debilitating, terminal disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Once-Vibrant Star Now Gripped by a Cruel Disease
Wearing pants, tinted glasses, and a dark windbreaker, 52-year-old Dane was spotted on the street. The actor was accompanied by friends across a crossing in Washington, D.C., with a notably smaller frame and a somber countenance.
He had a black crossbody bag strapped across his torso, one hand resting peacefully in his lap and the other around the chair’s movement controller.
The picture, which has since gone viral, depicts Dane’s deteriorating health in a tragic way. The singer is apparently having trouble speaking, which is a normal development of ALS, a neurological illness that gradually impairs a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe, according to the Daily Mail.
The actor first made the illness public in April of this year (2025), and his weakened appearance represents a clear and tragic development in his fight with it.
Dane revealed a few months ago that he was no longer able to fully use his right arm, and he was worried that his left arm might follow shortly. His description of the encounter at the time was “sobering.” The previously physically dominant celebrity is now confined to a wheelchair due to rapid degeneration, even though they were last spotted walking in mid-September.
The Daily Mail’s source offered a raw glimpse into the emotional toll the disease has taken. “This diagnosis has been devastating and as much as Eric has leaned on his Jewish faith to get through it all, it has been his family and friends that have really stepped up and have made him feel loved [sic],” the insider shared.
‘Tomorrow Isn’t Promised’: The Star Fights for Joy in the Face of Decline
Dane is making an effort to remain brave and keep his head held high in spite of the brutal situation. “Because all through this, it just keeps getting worse and is very sad, but Eric is trying to put on as much of a brave face as possible because he wants to enjoy what he has now because he now knows with his full heart that tomorrow isn’t promised,” the insider went on to say.
“He wants to live life and [sic] he doesn’t want people grieving him or for him while he is going through this terrible disease,” said the insider. “He just wants the people in his life to be present and as happy as they can be, he wants to always surround himself with positivity, that is a major thing that is driving him nowadays [sic].”
Those closest to Dane have been discreetly battling their own personal struggles behind the scenes, as he concentrates on keeping up a brave front.
Actress Rebecca Gayheart, Dane’s wife, and the couple’s two daughters, ages 13 and 15, are still figuring out their new normal, according to People. At Step Up’s 2025 Inspiration Awards in late September, Gayheart spoke candidly about the day-to-day life of the family.
“We have some professional therapists who are helping us, and we’re just trying to have some hope and do it with dignity, grace and [sic] love,” she said.
‘My Girls Are Really Suffering’: Rebecca Gayheart Opens up Further
But the anguish is undeniable — especially for the children. “I mean, it’s heartbreaking. My girls are really suffering, and we’re just trying to get through it. It’s a tough time,” Gayheart admitted candidly. Though she and Dane filed for divorce in 2018, the two later reconciled and called off their split. Today, their bond remains strong in the face of adversity.
“I mean, we’re definitely dealing with something that has brought us all together, and Eric will always be my family, whether we’re married or not, or living in the same house or not,” she continued. “Although we dislike the rationale, we are closer. I wish there was a cure for this terrible illness.”
“Good Morning America’s” Diane Sawyer previously quoted Dane as saying, “I wake up every day, and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening,” indicating his recognition of the psychological and physical toll his condition has had. It’s not a dream.
‘I’m Eric […] and Now a Person Living with ALS’: Inside the Actor’s Advocacy Efforts
He announced a collaboration with the group I AM ALS, leveraging the opportunity to further his advocacy efforts even though he was unable to attend the 2025 Emmy Awards.
In a video shared in September, he stated, “I’m Eric, an actor, a father and now a person living with ALS,” before urging action, “We need the fastest path to a cure […] Our goal: a billion dollars over the next three years.”
“Together, we’ll renew the landmark law Act for ALS, give promising treatments to thousands of patients like me, and finally, finally, push towards ending this disease,” he continued. As Gayheart maintains her philanthropic efforts — notably supporting young women through mentorship programs like Step Up — she remains a steady presence beside Dane.
In a strong advocacy meeting with California Congressman Eric Swalwell just days before he was publicly spotted in a wheelchair, Eric Dane urged politicians to step up the battle against ALS.
A Plea to Congress: ‘I Wanna Ring Every Bell’
Though visibly struggling with slurred speech — a heartbreaking effect of the disease — Dane spoke with determination and raw emotion during the meeting. “It so often takes all this time for these people to be diagnosed,” the father and husband said.
He went on to commend the current ALS Act, stressing its significance in expanding access to care and therapies. Dane made his purpose very personal as the discussion shifted to renewing the bipartisan legislation that has been essential in funding research and patient care.
“I wanna ring every bell,” he expressed. “I have two daughters at home. I wanna see them graduate college, get married, maybe have grandkids. I wanna be there for all that. So, I’m gonna fight until the last breath on this one.”
Congressman Swalwell responded with clear support, “We’re all in it with you.” To which Dane replied simply, “Thank you. Let’s do it, man.”
Fans in Shock as Eric Dane’s Condition Worsens
Concern swept over social media after video of Dane’s meeting with Congressman Swalwell was made public. Fans saw the actor’s sluggish speech and obviously frail state. Despite its inspirational message, the brief video caused viewers to feel heartbroken because they were astounded by how rapidly the illness appeared to be spreading.
“He is declining so fast [sic] this hurts my heart,” one netizen remarked. Another person penned, “He literally just announced this year, with somewhat full mobility, that this would happen. I thought it would’ve taken years for this to happen.”
Others struggled to watch the clip in its entirety. “Oh [sic] this is a hard watch,” someone admitted, while another shared, “this makes me so sad. he’s declining so fast [sic].” One comment encapsulated the collective dread that has begun to surface among longtime fans—“I don’t want to lose him.”
The Battle Rages on with Grace, Grit, and Love
Dane’s voice only gets louder as his body deteriorates, a haunting yet potent testament to his unwavering resolve. He is choosing advocacy, his family, and the battle of his life in the face of an unrelenting illness.
