Off The Record
Outrage As New ‘Black Mirror’ Public Restrooms Won’t Let You Have Toilet Paper Unless You Do This First
The recently installed technology in Chinese public restrooms has stunned Reddit users.
In a video that China Insider posted, a customer scans a QR code on the toilet paper dispenser before having to watch a brief commercial.
Several squares of paper were released when the commercial ended.
This somewhat uncomfortable machine charges consumers the equivalent of 6 cents to skip an advertisement if they need more paper and don’t want to go through another one.

The system is meant to reduce waste since authorities think people take more from the free rolls than they actually need to, despite the dismal overtones.
Reddit, a discussion site, has since compared it to Black Mirror.
“Black Mirror stuff,” went one comment on a news article that was posted on the website.
The humorous additions “Brown Mirror” and “Sometimes yellow mirror” came from readers.
A rush of pretty vehement criticism followed, with Reddit users eager to reiterate their beliefs.
“This would last about 5 seconds in America before it got smashed and the paper was just forcefully taken out,” wrote an individual.
“I would smash it on principle, and I’m pretty sure I have a key on my keyring capable of opening it,” said another.
“I’d bring my own paper and smash the dispenser on principle,” a third agitated person countered.
Conversely, it’s important to recognize and comprehend the cultural background of this situation.
Many readers of the unexpected toilet-related insight were aware that free paper is rarely provided in China’s public restrooms.
“Lived in China for 7 years, this is an improvement,” one of them revealed. “The vast majority of public toilets won’t have toilet paper. You carry around a pack yourself.”
It is generally advised to bring toilet paper with you because it might not always be available, according to a Trip Advisor traveler and other online travelers.
“Toilet paper is not scarce, it is not just not supplied in many public toilets”, they explained. “Where to put the paper depends on the sewage system to which the toilet in connected. Not an issue in hotels, modern shopping malls but an issue in older building. When required, there is usually a sign telling you to put it in the bin.”
Another even said that soap might not be a given, writing, “FYI, soap is also generally not provided anywhere except hotels and possibly very nice businesses (…). We learned quickly our first day in China to always carry small packages of tissues (available in any grocery or convenience store) and bottles of hand sanitizer (a bit harder to find in stores, so we always bring it from the USA) everywhere we went.”
