‘Folded Boy’ Finally Stands Tall After Living With 180° Spine Bend

For the first time in his life, a young guy who has been hunched over at a 180-degree angle has stood up straight.

Jiang Yanchen, a resident of Shandong province in China, has an uncommon and severe form of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic illness that causes inflammation in the spine and other parts of the body.

As a result, Jiang’s body began to fold into the shape of the letter “Z,” with his neck gradually bending backwards.

His head and butt were inches apart at their worst.

The now-21-year-old was in excruciating pain all the time. Because his lung capacity was just 20% of that of a typical healthy adult, AS found it difficult to walk, eat, and even breathe. Additionally, he was compelled to lie prone or kneel at school.

However, he was unable to get the right care because of a lack of medical resources.

That was prior to 2023. Jiang has had four significant spine realignment procedures in the last two years, during which time physicians broke bones in his hips, chest, and lumbar and cervical spine.

In June, he had his last procedure, which took an incredible twelve hours.

He was able to lie flat on his hospital bed right away, and according to the Global Times, his spine had been adjusted by about 170 degrees.

Additionally, he made his first upright steps on a livestream following two months of rigorous physical treatment and rehabilitation.

‘The world’s first successful 180-degree spinal orthopaedic surgery,’ according to Jiang’s medical team, which was headed by orthopaedic surgeon Liang Yijian.

Liang stated that Jiang’showed persistence considerably more than that of an average human being’ and that the treatment has also restored his heart and lung functioning to normal.

Following the surgeries, Jiang said: “All the pain is worth it when I see myself more like an ordinary person,” adding that he ‘felt reborn.’

This month, he is anticipated to return to school.

Users quickly expressed their admiration for Jiang and his medical team on Reddit after his tale was posted.

One user wrote: “I can’t imagine the pain this guy went through before and after and especially the recovery. Mad props!” as another said: “Modern medicine is magnificent despite a very loud minority trying their absolute best to undermine it.”

A third commented: “It’s mind blowing what we can do,” meanwhile a fourth put it simply: “Hell yeah medical science.”
