Extreme Athlete Felix Baumgartner Tragically Dies Aged 56—Cause Of Death Revealed
Felix Baumgartner, who rose to fame over ten years ago, passed away in a paragliding accident.
Back in 2012, the Austrian skydiver made headlines when he leaped to Earth from a helium balloon.
He died in a paragliding accident that happened Thursday, July 17, in the town of Porto Sant’Elpidio in eastern Italy.
The 56-year-old lost consciousness while flying and then lost control of his paraglider, according to local media. After that, he crashed into a hotel pool, seriously hurting a staff member.
According to reports, the daredevil died right away. The worker reportedly sustained a neck injury and was taken to the hospital.
Baumgartner’s most sad Instagram story post was made just hours before he passed away, with the remark, “Too much wind.”
The Austrian foreign ministry verified the reports to Germany’s dpa news agency after the incident.
Red Bull, the energy drink corporation that had previously funded a lot of Baumgartner’s activities, also announced his death.
When Baumgartner leaped from a helium balloon almost 24 miles above the ground in 2012, he became a household name while working for Red Bull.
At the time, this was the highest freefall and the highest manned balloon trip.
He breached the sound barrier during this leap, reaching a maximum speed of 834 mph.
Social media tributes have started to pour in, with many praising Baumgartner’s remarkable life accomplishments and his commitment to his work.
One social media user reflecting on the news of his passing said: “This death feels like Steve Irwin’s; you expect it to be from something wild daredevil stunt but nope, just paragliding accident. Sad.”
Another said: “I remember watching this on TV when I was in high school. The wild ride comes to an end eventually. RIP to a legend. If you’re gonna die young, die doing what you love.”
A third added: “I remember his Red Bull jump from space. It was insane. He lost consciousness and came back to. Bro was beast and died being an absolute badass. You can rest peacefully now Champ, you did your thing.”
While another commented: “He survived Stratosphere but died in paragliding. He was meant for big thing in life . paragliding was too small for his calibers.”
With another sweetly added: “A true daredevil and legend of human courage.”
