Teen Camp Counselors Reveal They Wrote Girls Names On Their Bodies As Floodwaters Rose

Two adolescent counsellors who worked at Camp Mystic have talked about their reactions when they learnt that the devastating floods in Texas were posing a threat to the camp.

Flash flooding has wreaked havoc across central Texas, especially in villages along the Guadalupe River, killing at least 104 people.

A month’s worth of intense rain fell in a matter of hours, causing the river to overflow and the water levels to rise to 26 feet.

Along with the terrible death toll, the tragedy has been especially heartbreaking because so many young children, including those from a Christian summer camp called Camp Mystic, have been reported missing.

Some of the youngsters from the camp have already been confirmed dead by authorities, while others are still missing.

Silvana Garza and Maria Paula, two surviving counsellors who were at the camp when the area was affected by the floods, have talked about their tragic experience and how they had to think about a very macabre prospect.

Maria and Silvana scribbled names on themselves and the children in case they were separated and their bodies needed to be identified, she told Mexican news source NMas over the weekend.

Maria said, as per the New York Post: “Us as counselors, we started to write our names on our skin, anywhere that was visible. We did the same for the girls, wrote their names anywhere that was easy to see.”

The two also discussed maintaining a “happy face” so as not to frighten the kids they were looking after.

Silvana said, “At the time, we started to prepare our girls because we thought we were also going to be evacuated.”

“We told them to pack a bag, to pack their favorite stuffed animal. We didn’t know if we were going to be evacuated or not. We were just waiting.”

According to a recent statement posted on their website, Camp Mystic has revealed that 27 campers and counsellors have died as a result of the floodwaters.

The message reads: “Camp Mystic is grieving the loss of 27 campers and counsellors following the catastrophic flooding on the Guadalupe river. Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy. We are praying for them constantly.”

It continued, “We have been in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls.”

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from community, first responders, and officials at every level.”

“We ask for your continued prayers, respect and privacy for each of our families affected. May the Lord continue to wrap His presence around all of us.”
