Why Microscopic Mites Invade Your Face Every Night While You Sleep

As you rest your eyes for a crucial day ahead, many people find that going to bed is the greatest time of day.

Even though a lot of sleep specialists discuss creating the ideal sleeping environment, you can find solace in the knowledge that you’re never really alone while you’re asleep.

Basically, you have some unwanted guests every night when dozens of eight-legged mites crawl over your face.

Fortunately, demodex mites are invisible and imperceptible, but you can be sure they are present on every part of your body.

The tiny parasites inhabit the outer regions of hair follicles and find their greasy contents to be quite appetising.

Alejandra Perotti, a professor of invertebrate biology at the University of Reading in the UK, said, “While we are sleeping, they come out and are very happy, mating, visiting relatives, walking on our faces. The moment we wake up, they go back inside the pore.”

According to CNN, the expert continued by saying there’s nothing to be particularly concerned about, even though some of you might find that a little unsettling.

Demodex mites have developed to withstand UV radiation from the sun, which could harm their DNA, so they can continue to remove debris from your pores.

The human body provides melatonin, a hormone made in the skin that promotes sleep and, crucially, gives the mites energy to survive, in return for the mites clearing out debris.

These microscopic parasites can occasionally create problems, but there are steps you can do to prevent this.

The knowledge was presented in a popular video by US doctor Dr. Dan Friederich, who specialises in delivering eye care recommendations and other medical guidance tips.

According to Dr. Friederich, he can frequently determine whether a pet owner let their pet to share a bed with them by looking for parasites in the creature’s eyelashes.

“There is a common mite called Demodex that we see in the eyelashes that is a parasite. And the minute I see it in someone’s eyes, the first question I ask is, ‘do you sleep with your dog at night?’,” he explained.

There’s a really common cause of parasites appearing in your eyelashes, as the health expert added: “Don’t sleep with your animals if you can help it.”
