Two University Students Found Dead In Dorm Room In Suspected Murder-Suicide
Authorities in the area have determined that the shooting event involving two students at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville was most likely a murder-suicide.
Two students were found at Wilgus Hall, the student residence, with gunshot wounds, a university spokeswoman revealed to the media.
They were identified as 22-year-old Hallie Helms and Kelsie Martin.
Although the exact time of the incident is still being determined, authorities have said they think it happened on Monday, May 19 at around 4 p.m. local time.
Martin, a psychology major and assistant resident director, was taken to Southwest Health before being transferred to UW hospital, where she passed away. Helms, an elementary education major, was declared dead at the site.

According to the preliminary autopsy, Helms died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while Martin died from a gunshot wound.
The university added: “All indications at this time from the preliminary autopsy suggest a murder-suicide.”
They added that no further people are thought to have been involved in the incident at this time.
According to the university’s graduation program, Martin received a degree in psychology and Helms received a degree in primary education on Saturday, May 17.
Following the incident, the University posted to its Facebook page saying, “Thank you to all who have reached out to us through messages and offered to support in so many meaningful ways. We are overwhelmed by your kindness. We are a close community, and this outpouring of care is a powerful reminder of who we are. We do not take it for granted. #PioneerStrong.”
Additionally, the institution has announced that counselling is accessible to the campus community and has cancelled final exams for the remainder of the week.
Tony Evers, the governor of Wisconsin, also used social media to clarify that he had been informed of the circumstances.
In his own Facebook post, he wrote, “I’ve been briefed on the situation at UW-Platteville, and we will continue to remain in close contact with university officials. As we await more information, please keep UW-Platteville students, faculty, staff, and the greater Platteville community in your thoughts.”
