Karmelo Anthony Makes Major Legal Move Before Facing Judge In Shocking Case

Before his initial court appearance, Karmelo Anthony, 17, who is accused of killing high school athlete Austin Metcalf during a track meet in Fresco, Texas earlier this month, has engaged a new defense lawyer.

On April 2, during a track meet at Kuykendall Stadium, a dispute over Anthony’s improper seating led to a stabbing in Metcalf’s heart.

Tragic stories from last week described how Anthony was told to leave the tent reserved for Frisco Memorial High School students by Metcalf, a top athlete and prospective football player, as he was at the competition with his twin brother, Hunter. Anthony attends Centennial High School.

Before Anthony took a knife from his rucksack and stabbed Metcalf in the chest, the two, who had never met before that fatal day, exchanged words. Tragically, in the arms of his twin brother, Metcalf bled to death.

Anthony was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing. He is currently being held at Collin County Jail on a $1 million bond. As of yesterday, an opinion-splitting fundraiser for Anthony and his family “during this challenging and difficult time,” had raised in excess of $400,000.

His family decided to hire Dallas criminal defense lawyer Mike Howard in advance of Anthony’s bond hearing, which is set for today, Monday, April 14.

Billy Clark and Kim T. Cole, the teen’s previous attorneys, informed WFAA on Saturday that they would no longer be defending him. The legislative change was revealed by the teen’s non-profit support group, Next Generation Action Network (NGAN).

“The family of Karmelo Anthony has officially retained Attorney Mike Howard as lead counsel in Karmelo’s legal defense,” the group said in a statement.

“We are grateful for the early support from Attorneys Billy Clark and Kim Cole, and we continue working to build a strong legal team for the fight ahead.”

“Karmelo deserves what every citizen deserves: fair treatment and full rights under the law. We won’t stop fighting until he gets it,’” the organization added.

According to sources, Austin Metcalf was given a private funeral at the Hope Fellowship Frisco East church on Saturday morning. There was a private burial following the funeral.

Peace be with you, Austin Metcalf.
