Off The Record
The Gulf Of Mexico Will Officially Be Renamed On Google Maps, But It May Not Be What You Expect
Following Donald Trump’s announcement that he would rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, Google Maps released an update.
As it turns out, there is a clause in the location service’s terms and conditions that has restricted Trump’s power in this regard.
Trump’s new executive orders about Mexico
The Republican leader made it clear in his inaugural speech last week (20 January) that he would crack down on immigration and tighten constraints on the US’s potential influence abroad.
He proposed a travel ban for refugees and asylum seekers and proclaimed a “national emergency” at the US-Mexican border, saying: “We will seal our border and bring back the travel ban.”
“Remember the famous travel ban? We didn’t take people from certain areas of the world. We’re not taking them from infested countries.”
He also said that ‘criminal aliens’ will be sent back to ‘where they came from’ and that illegal immigration to the United States would ‘immediately be terminated’.
The 78-year-old Trump also said that the Gulf would henceforth be known as the “Gulf of America,” reintroducing the contentious “Remain in Mexico” policy and declaring the “largest deportation program in history.”
The ‘Gulf of America’
Speaking about the 1,700-mile coastline, Trump said the Gulf’s “natural resources and wildlife” “remain central to America’s economy today” and that it is an “integral asset” to the States.
At a conference in Mar-a-Lago, Florida on January 7, he had already made the same suggestion, saying the new name had a “nice ring to it.”
“The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name and it’s appropriate,” he added at the time.
Will it be changed on Google Maps?
The Telegraph claims that Google Maps executives will comply with Trump’s request to rename the company.
However, the ‘Gulf of America’ will only be available to app/website users who reside in the United States until the Geographic Names Information System officially approves it.
The water will continue to be shown on Google Maps as the “Gulf of Mexico” for the rest of the world, including Mexico.
In addition, the tech company consented to Trump’s request to change the name of the highest mountain in the US, Mount Denali, to Mount McKinley.
“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” a Google representative said to the media this week.
“For geographic features in the US, this is when Geographic Names Information System is updated. When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the US quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America.”
“When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names.”
“That applies here too.”
Mexico’s verdict
After Trump’s name change was announced, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo declared that while Americans could follow his name change if they so desired, Mexicans would not be doing so.
“He says that he will call it the Gulf of America on its continental shelf,” she said at a press conference on Tuesday, January 21, laughing at the possibility.
“For us it is still the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico.”
She continued, “Regarding the decrees that President Donald Trump signed yesterday, I would like to say the following: The people of Mexico can be sure that we will always defend our sovereignty and our independence.”
Pardo responded by arguing that the US should rename itself “Mexican American” based on a map from the 17th century that supports this title for the region, using Trump’s own reasoning to disprove him.
