Why A ‘Horrific’ Phone Conversation ‘Freaked Out’ Danish Officials Caused Donald Trump To Want To Buy Greenland
Donald Trump has already begun implementing several major objectives since taking office earlier this week.
He also wants to try something different, like renaming the Gulf of Mexico or releasing classified papers.
Trump has stated quite clearly that he is interested in purchasing Greenland, a topic that was addressed before to his inauguration on Monday, January 20.
Particularly after the US president allegedly “freaked out” Danish authorities with a “horrific” phone chat.
Denmark has declared that Greenland, the largest island in the world and a largely independent country, is not for sale.
Trump’s ‘fiery’ phone call
A recent phone call appears to have intensified Trump and his administration’s interest in acquiring Greenland, which hasn’t been taken seriously.
Following Trump’s phone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Danish officials who asked not to be named spoke to the Financial Times.
Despite the offer to expand Greenland-US collaboration on natural resources and military locations, they said the president was combative, aggressive, and furious.
An unnamed source said: “[Trump] was very firm. It was a cold shower. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But I do think it is serious, and potentially very dangerous.”
Why does Trump want Greenland?
Trump had talked about his motivations for wishing to purchase Greenland prior to becoming office.
“People don’t really know if Denmark has any legal right to it,” Trump claimed, while speaking to reporters. “But if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security – that’s for the free world. I’m talking about protecting the free world.”
“You don’t even need binoculars, you look outside you have China, ships all over the place. You have Russian ships all over the place. We’re not letting that happen.”
He echoed this in a post to his social media platform, Truth Social, where Trump said: “For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
“Greenland is an incredible place. The people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
What Greenland thinks
Greenland’s prime minister, Mute Edege, “has been very, very clear… there is a lot of support among the people of Greenland that Greenland is not for sale and will not be in the future,” according to Frederikson’s earlier statement.
Furthermore, Edege has stated that he has no interest in Greenland joining the US, despite his previous calls for independence from Denmark.
