Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare CEO Shot And Killed — Footage Of Him Last Seen Alive Released
On Wednesday morning, December 4, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
The 50-year-old CEO was apparently walking to UnitedHealthcare’s investor meeting when an unidentified shooter came up behind him and fired several rounds, hitting him in the calf and back, according to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
Mount Sinai West Hospital declared Thompson deceased.
According to NBC, police termed the incident a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack.”
According to surveillance footage released by NBC, the shooter waited for a number of minutes before shooting Thompson, who was dressed in a blue suit.
As he fell, the attacker pursued him and kept shooting.
According to the police, the gun seemed to jam but was unlocked before the gunman started shooting again.
According to Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, officers found a cell phone, three discharged shell casings, and three live 9 mm rounds close to the site.
Investigators think the shooter used a gun that had a silencer installed.
The guy was last spotted entering Central Park after fleeing on foot and switching to a rental bike.
According to the police, the guy was carrying a gray backpack and was dressed in black jeans and a sweatshirt.
Although the motivation is still unknown, police believe Thompson was singled out on purpose.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette, added to the doubt by recalling that her husband had been threatened.
“Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him,” she said.
The family continues to mourn his loss, describing him as an “incredibly loving, generous, and talented man,” and has requested privacy during this difficult time.
UnitedHealth Group issued a statement following the incident, expressing shock and sadness over Thompson’s passing and characterizing him as a friend and respected colleague.
The business expressed its deepest sympathies to Thompson’s family and loved ones and promised to fully cooperate with the NYPD’s inquiry.
Thompson’s leadership and professional accomplishments prior to his untimely demise demonstrated his enormous influence on the healthcare sector.
Thompson joined the UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and was appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021, managing close to 140,000 employees globally, according to his LinkedIn page.
Before taking over as CEO, Thompson oversaw UnitedHealthcare’s Community & State division, which offers healthcare services to underprivileged communities, and Medicare & Retirement division, the largest senior health business in the United States.
Later, he demonstrated his adaptability and leadership inside the company by holding a number of high-level positions, including Chief Financial Officer for numerous divisions.
Thompson worked in a variety of capacities at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) for almost seven years prior to joining UnitedHealth Group.
In his capacity as Manager of Transaction Advisory Services from 2002 to 2004, he handled both domestic and foreign mergers and acquisitions while performing due diligence for corporate, venture capital, and private equity clients in sectors including manufacturing, telecommunications, insurance, and automobiles.
Thompson previously served as an Audit Manager at PwC from 1997 to 2002, managing regulatory audits, debt offerings, and SEC filings while supervising audits for major global corporations.
Thompson’s intellectual prowess was particularly noteworthy.
He graduated with valedictorian honors from the University of Iowa in 1997 and was awarded the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key for having the highest GPA.
Among other honors, he received recognition as a Carver, State of Iowa, and faculty scholar.
The business community is still shocked by the passing of such a well-known and successful individual.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the facts surrounding Thompson’s death as a result of the attack.
Crime Stoppers, a group that collaborates with law enforcement to investigate crimes, has purportedly offered a $10,000 prize for information that results in an arrest, yet no arrests have been made.
