Jay Leno Makes Life-Altering Decision Amid Wife’s Dementia Diagnosis

The 73-year-old Jay Leno has applied to be his wife’s estate custodian.

Mavis Leno, the 77-year-old wife of Leno, “suffers from dementia,” per court filings.

The former late-night TV presenter is attempting to carry out an inheritance plan that, in his opinion, his wife would finish independently “if she had the capacity to do so.”

Mavis has been “progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,” according to court documents filed in Los Angeles on January 26. As a result, she is unable to handle her own estate.

“Jay desires to execute an estate plan, including a revocable trust and will, which will provide for Mavis and Mavis’s brother and her sole living heir aside from Jay,” the documents read.

Doctors mention Mavis’ diagnosis in court filings, but they never say what kind of dementia she has, only that it affects her “memory, comprehension/processing, [and] delusional ideation.”

The documents also state Jay has “handled the couple’s finances throughout the term of their forty-three-year marriage, and will continue to do so until his passing.”

Mavis is eligible to attend the hearing, which is scheduled for April 9, but she is allegedly “unwilling” and “does not wish to contest the establishment of a conservatorship.”

Taking care of a loved one who has dementia is never simple.
