Woman Turned 110-Year-Old Dead Tree Into A Free Little Library, And It’s The Most Awesome Thing You’ve Seen
Books continue to hold a special and significant place in our lives, even in this connected age where we have instant access to a wealth of knowledge.
It is highly rewarding to be able to immerse oneself in literary fiction and read slowly and profoundly, as opposed to the need to scan and scroll.
This practice also helps to cultivate critical thinking and empathy, two qualities that are increasingly lacking in our culture.
The nonprofit Little Free Library “inspiring a love of reading, building community, and sparking creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world” contributes to ensuring that we preserve our intrinsic love of books.
With over 75,000 libraries available in 88 countries thus far, these tiny libraries are springing up everywhere!
However, an Idaho family in Coeur d’Alene produced the most amazing one we’ve seen so far.
Rather than being dug up and destroyed, Sharalee Armitage Howard, a librarian, artist, and former bookbinder, determined that the enormous stump of a 110-year-old cottonwood tree would create the ideal site for a “Little Tree Library.”
Someone willing to take the time to give new life to a stump would never cut down a healthy tree to do it,” Sharalee told Bored Panda. “It was dropping huge branches for years onto the sidewalk and street (even without windy weather). We were really worried about someone getting hurt. One finally hit our son’s car.”
“The average lifespan of a cottonwood tree is merely 40–50 years, so it has to live more than twice that already!”
One of the most beautiful libraries we’ve ever seen, the stump was carved out from the inside, covered with a roof, and outfitted with a warm interior and outdoor lighting for a genuinely fairytale appearance!
