1.7 Million Dozen Eggs Recalled Nationwide Over Salmonella Contamination

Due to concerns that they might be tainted with a potentially fatal disease, over 2 million eggs are being recalled.

This Monday, the FDA announced a recall of 1.7 million brown, cage-free, certified organic eggs that have already caused 21 hospitalisations and 79 illnesses.

Salmonella, a bacterium that kills over 420 Americans annually, is said to be present in the eggs sold by the California-based August Egg Company.

The eggs were offered for sale in seven states: California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Nebraska, Kentucky, and New Jersey, between February 29 and May 17.

However, authorities worry that some of the contaminated boxes might still be hiding in refrigerators and endangering other people. To date, no fatalities have been reported.

The recalled eggs should be thrown out or returned to the seller for a complete refund.

Raleys, Simple Truth, and Sun Harvest were among the 29 branded egg packages that were part of the recall.

The Julian Date, a time stamp that indicates when the products were packaged, ranges from 32 to 126. The short side of the carton is where the Julian Date is located.

Since salmonella cannot withstand temperatures above 140F (60C), frying eggs kills the germ.

However, officials caution that it is dangerous to boil eggs sunnyside up because this could result in the top of the egg not being hot enough to destroy the bacteria.

After 27 of the 30 patients surveyed said they had eaten the eggs before getting sick, an investigation connected the outbreak to the eggs.

Salmonella was also found during an inspection at the company’s egg processing plant, which was connected to the epidemic.

Salmonella can infect eggs in two ways: either during the hen’s development or after the egg has been laid, when the bacteria attaches itself to the shell after coming into touch with excrement and penetrating the shell.

Salmonella can spread to several additional eggs if it gets on crucial equipment.

Because salmonella cannot withstand temperatures beyond 140F (60C), experts advise that properly cooking eggs, such as by boiling or frying, will destroy the bacteria.

According to estimates, 1.35 million Americans contract salmonella each year as a result of eating tainted food or water.

Diarrhoea, cramping or pain in the stomach, nausea, and vomiting are among the symptoms that appear six hours to six days after infection.

Many individuals’ illnesses resolve on their own in a few of days.

However, in extreme situations, it may result in lethargy, high fevers, pains, headaches, and recurrent diarrhoea.

Rarely, the germs may also spread to other body organs, which could be lethal.

Officials caution that an infected patient may transmit the bacterium to others by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces.
