Olympic Runner Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, Dies Tragically After A Fight With Her Boyfriend: Shocking Details Revealed
Rebecca Cheptegei tragically passed away after a furious argument with her ex-boyfriend. Online, statements outlining the events have been circulated.
Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, unfortunately died shortly after being admitted to Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County’s Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). The Ugandan marathon runner’s admission came after her ex-boyfriend launched a brutal attack.
Chief of Clinical Services and Surgery at MTRH and acting CEO Dr. Owen Menach verified that Cheptegei passed away in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at 5 a.m. from what he called complete organ failure.
The awful news has deeply devastated him and other medical professionals, he added, adding, “[We] were doing our best to save her life.”
In an interview with Nation Sport this morning, Cheptegei’s family member Dr. Tony Sabila verified the date of her departure as this morning, September 5.
“It is true that we lost our sister this morning, although the doctors tried to save her life and I was there personally,” disclosed Dr. Sabila.
Cheptegei had spent her time in the intensive care unit due to serious burns that covered her entire body from open flames. Eighty percent of her body was burned, according to Nation Sport.
As a result of the severe burns, Cheptegei required complete sedation and intubation. She also required the use of a ventilator for breathing and was on full life support for blood, fluids, and medicines.
The Kenyan authorities had announced before she passed away that Cheptegei would be flown to Nairobi for expert care. On September 4, they made this announcement.
Peter Tum, the Principal Secretary for Sports, revealed that following conversations with Uganda’s Sports Minister Peter Ogwang, the transportation plan was verified. But before they could carry out their plan, Cheptegei passed away.
Sports Jack Tuwei, the president of Kenya and vice-president of World Athletics, commented on the tragedy and denounced what transpired.
Additionally, his statement revealed that Cheptegei had suffered harm as a result of a property dispute with her former boyfriend. The BBC reported that the ex set her alight after dousing her with petrol. According to north-west Kenyan authorities, this happened on Sunday, September 1, while Cheptegei, who competed in the Paris Olympics, was on her way home from church.
“As a federation, we want to condemn this in the strongest possible terms because this is not the way we should live,” noted Tuwei at the end of his message.
Donald Rukare, a professor and attorney from Uganda, posted a statement on X on the athlete’s passing.
He expressed, “We have learnt of the sad passing on of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei OLY following a vicious attack by her boyfriend. May her gentle soul rest in peace, and we strongly condemn violence against women.”
He continued throughout the rest of his letter to talk about how foolish and cowardly the attack was. He said in closing that even though Cheptegei is no longer with us, her legacy will endure.
Rukare had earlier tweeted about the September 3 attack by Cheptegei’s ex-boyfriend. While she was in the hospital, he urged the people to offer prayers and hope for a full recovery.
Ann, a relative of the late running sensation, confirmed the athlete’s passing alongside Rukare. Ann posted a statement regarding the tragedy on the late star’s family’s behalf.
Via a since-deleted Instagram Stories post made earlier today (September 5), Ann stated, “It has been hectic the last couple of days, we ask for your privacy as we get through this. Thank you all for your prayers and encouragement. We will serve you with more information as time goes by. God bless you.”
Ann went on to make another post in which she responded to people who had expressed interest in making donations to help with Cheptegei’s burial and medical costs.
